25th Annual Crab Bounty Hunt
This will be Winchester Bay's 25th Crab Bounty Hunt, enticing sport crabbers to find a tagged crab and return it to the Sportsmen's Cannery for a hat or T-shirt and to be eligible for $1,000 in prize money. If there is no single winning tag, then those crabbers retuning tags will be entered into a drawing where the $1,000 will still be given away, in $500, $300 and $200 segments.
The contest runs from August 1 to Labor Day Sunday and 100 crabs are returned to the river during the month with numbered tags awaiting a chance to be recaught. They are placed near the inner harbor docks, in Half Moon Bay, the Coast Guard dock and at spots in the river. Each year about 30% of the tags are turned in with some entrants capturing multiple crabs. The split between off the docks or by boat is 50% - 50%.
If you're going crabbing this summer, Winchester Bay is the place where you can have fun, savor a great delicacy and maybe catch $1,000. Art by the Bay, the Labor Day art show, will take place this year on August 30 and 31 at Keel Park in Winchester Bay. A variety of art vendors will be displaying their wares and taking delight is showing some part of their creative process. From raku pottery to glass blowing and plein air artists capturing the scene and being seen, there is much to do. If you are a performing artist, give us a call and we will give you a stage.
This year "Soulpie" will be performing under the big tent on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. A 13 member band and growing, it has a big jazz sound, so come down enjoy an evening meal and dance the night away. There will also be art and craft activities for the kids and additional surprises.
